What Is at Stake in the Controversy over Conditionals

چکیده
1. INTRODUCTION The following remarks are going to suggest that there is more at stake in the current controversy over condition-als than merely the logic of conditionals. Among the more general issues involved are the limits of truth-conditionality, the implications of this for certain programs in the philosophy of language, the values of truth and probability, and the rationale of logic [and, incidentally, the foundations of probability and decision theory too, but I won't get into that].

Towards a Radically Pragmatic Theory of If-Conditionals
It is generally agreed that constructions of the form “if P, Q” are capable of conveying a number of different relations between antecedent and consequent, with pragmatics playing a central role in determining these relations. Van Dijk and colleagues present three cases to illustrate and discuss the relationship between medicalisation and overdiagnosis. In this commentary, I consider each of the case studies in turn, and in doing so emphasise two main points. The first is that it is not possible to assess whether overdiagnosis is occurring based solely on incidence rates: it is necessary also to have data about the b...

The ...
